On Wings of Words
The Extraordinary Life of Emily Dickinson
by Jennifer Berne; illustrated by Becca Stadtlander
published February 18, 2020
This book is a lovely introduction to the poetry of Emily Dickinson - and to the poet herself. It will hopefully inspire further exploration into both poet and poetry. Here are two to get you started.
“Hope” is the thing with feathers
"Hope" is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -
And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -
I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.
I'm Nobody - Who Are You?
I’m Nobody! Who are you?
Are you – Nobody – too?
Then there’s a pair of us!
Don’t tell! they’d advertise – you know!
How dreary – to be – Somebody!
How public – like a Frog –
To tell one’s name – the livelong June –
To an admiring Bog!
